Biblical Studies: Old Testament Studies

  • OTS 501 Old Testament Survey: An overview and general study of all the books of the Old Testament.  Questions of authorship, audience, themes and outlines are developed with emphasis on how each book is integrated as a whole.
  • OTS 510 Pentateuch: An integrated survey of the geographical, cultural, and historical backgrounds, of each book of the Pentateuch.  Significant issues of the Pentateuch are covered including evolution, higher criticism and the laws of Israel’s theocracy with regard to their content, meaning and applicability for today.
  • OTS 511 Genesis: An in-depth study of the book of Genesis covering topics as the Creation, the Flood, origins of Man, Sin, the Earth, Seasons, races of Man, World Religions, promises of the Messiah, and much more.
  • OTS 620 Historical Books: The study of the Old Testament books from Joshua to Ester, which deals with the nation of Israel in its rise, disruption, fall, captivity and restoration. This course demonstrates how the Bible's historical books make up the "narrative backbone" of the Old Testament. This course also examines the books' historic setting, literary artistry, role within the larger body of Scripture, and theological impact.
  • OTS 730 Poetic Books: Selected portions of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon are studied with respect to divine inspiration and practical teaching.
  • OTS 731 Psalms:  Though the Psalms are perhaps the most familiar portion of the Hebrew Bible, they are also among the most difficult to interpret. This course will guide the student in their interpretation and application of the Psalms. In this course we will explore the nature, structure, and authorship of the Psalter. We will examine the use of Psalms in worship, show how psalmists used historical reflection to serve their theological purposes, and examine the different types of psalms.
  • OTS 732 Job: This course is a thorough study of the book of Job using both an academic and personal-devotional style approach. Theological issues are raised such as the problem of suffering and the sovereignty of God are discussed and evaluated. An in depth introspective aspect of the study will complement your devotional life, while adding depth and to your ministry.
  • OTS 733 The Life of David:  This course will follow the life of David from the time he was anointed by Samuel until his death. Attention will be given to the major developments of his life and how God providentially trained, protected and provided for him. David had seasons of great faith and seasons of disturbing doubt. He had moments of courage and moments of cowardice. He enjoyed great victories and suffered humiliating defeats. There is much we can learn from his journey. He was the greatest leader Israel has ever known. What qualities did he possess that made him an incredible leader?
  • OTS 810 The Prophets: An intensive historical, doctrinal, and critical study of the international relations in the days of the prophets as well as the religious, spiritual, and civic decline of Judah during that time.  Special emphasis is placed on the Messianic and Millennial prophecies.
  • OTS 811 Isaiah: The Message of the prophet is studied with emphasis on the Messianic vision, how it affected his generation and how it shaped the expectations of the generations, which followed.  Literary and authorship questions will be addressed.
  • OTS 814 Daniel & Revelation: An exegetical study of Daniel and Revelation drawing parallels with how the Church of Christ is shown in the light of prophetic truth.
  • OTS 890 Specialized Bible Study: A custom made course of study available for students who would like to study a book of the Old Testament that is not currently offered.  A special syllabus will be created by a faculty advisor with a timetable and projects to fulfill the 3 credit hour requirement.
