Youth Ministries Catalog Course Descriptions

All courses are worth three semester credit hours unless otherwise noted


Undergraduate Courses:

  • YM101 Intro to Youth Ministry -Examines purpose of youth ministry, youth in modern American culture, needs of youth and their parents, the history and future of the youth ministry profession, and elements of programming.
  • YM102 The Gospel and Todays Youth -Examines ministry to teenagers from biblical, theological, historical, socio-cultural, international and educational perspectives. Attention is paid to helping students form a sound philosophy of ministry to youth.
  • YM221 Adolescent Spiritual Formation -Overviews dynamics in spiritual development of youth; interrelated, distinct stages of moral, faith and spiritual development. For students planning Christian growth experiences for youth.
  • YM241 Counseling Youth -Examines needs and problems of normal and troubled adolescent experience. Attention given to developing a strategy of ministry through counseling.
  • YM253 Leadership for Ministry -Surveys a variety of philosophies, styles, issues and current challenges for developing leadership in youth ministry. Students are challenged to grow as leaders and to develop a personal philosophy of Christian leadership.
  • YM310 Speaking to Youth -Explores communication strategy and elements of homiletic theory in effective presentation of gospel message to youth. Opportunities to design and deliver youth talks.
  • YM311 Evangelism and Discipleship -Analyzes spiritual decision-making process, communication theory and strategy for contemporary culture, and the art of persuasion; spiritual formation and nurture. Incorporates individual experiences in personal evangelism and small-group discipleship.
  • YM315 Programming Youth Ministry -A study of the planning and implementation of the youth ministry vehicle. Specific programming aspects of the sermons/youth talks, games, music, small groups, special events, camps and retreats, volunteer leaders, and missions projects will be examined. Attention will be given to developing a plan for your group.
  • YM325 Technology for Ministers- A hands on study of how to successfully integrate modern technology into church and para-church ministry. Basic Web design, digital video presentations, computer publishing and more are introduced and examined.
  • YM371 Selected Topics -An upper-level seminar course focuses on select topics relevant to the field of youth ministry.
  • YM425, 426 Internship I, II (credits will be determined by instructor)-Our internship is the heart of our program. Under the supervision of an on site youth minister you can obtain "real world" experience in a church or parachurch setting. Many students can find a appropriate learning environment in there home church. This mutually beneficial relationship between church and student is modeled from the New Testament example of Timothy.
  • YM471, 472 Research I, II (credits will be determined by instructor)- Individual research for specialized situations.
  • YM 491 Senior Seminar - Reading and research in a selected area of youth ministry. Integrative experience brings to culmination various facets of ministry with youth; for senior majors or minors.

Graduate Courses:

  • YM501 Foundations of Youth Ministry- An overview of the purpose of youth ministry, youth in modern American culture, needs of youth and their parents, the history and future of the youth ministry profession, and briefly complements the theory with practical youth ministry programming ideas.
  • YM512 Understanding Youth Culture- Examines today's youth by reading various research works and observing television/movies/music and environments that are targeted directly towards today's adolescent.
  • YM641 Counseling the Adolescent- Examines the needs and problems of normal and troubled adolescent experience. Attention is given to developing a strategy of ministry through counseling. A practical approach to professional referral is examined.
  • YM621 Adolescent Spiritual Formation- Overviews the dynamics in spiritual development of youth; interrelated, distinct stages of moral, faith and spiritual development. For students planning Christian growth experiences for youth.
  • YM653 Advanced Leadership for Ministry -Surveys a variety of philosophies, styles, issues and current challenges for developing leadership in youth ministry. Students are challenged to grow as leaders and to develop a personal philosophy of Christian leadership.
  • YM710 Communicating the Gospel to Youth- Explores communication strategy and elements of homiletic theory in effective presentation of gospel message to youth. Opportunities to design and deliver youth talks are integrated into the youth workers ministry at a local church or parachurch ministry.
  • YM711 Urban Youth Ministry- Addresses the special needs that arise in an urban youth ministry setting. Research intensive.
  • YM715 Advanced Programming of Youth Ministry -An advanced study of the planning and implementation of the youth ministry vehicle. Specific programming aspects of the sermons/youth talks, games, music, small groups, special events, camps and retreats, volunteer leaders, and missions projects will be examined. Attention will be given to developing a plan for your group.
  • YM725 Technology for Ministers- A hands on study of how to successfully integrate modern technology into church and para-church ministry. Basic Web design, digital video presentations, computer publishing and more are introduced and examined.
  • YM825, 826 Internship I, II (credits will be determined by instructor)- You can obtain "real world" experience in a church or parachurch setting. Many students can find a appropriate learning environment in there home church. Many youth ministry professionals can journal there own experiences and use their observations to fulfill the course requirements.
